Who is the Center Named After?

The Center is named after Norman A.J. Asselstine and Robert H. Bigler.  Mr Asselstine was the longest serving Scoutmaster of Troop 31.  Mr. "A", as he was known served as Scoutmaster from 1941-1974 and remained active until his death in 1997.  Mr. Bigler was the longest serving Committee Chairman.  Mr. Bigler served for 50 years as Troop Committee Chairman.  Mr. Bigler died on January 23, 2004.  Both men created a legacy of Scouting, that will never be forgotten.

What is the Asselstine-Bigler Scout Center?

The Asselstine-Bigler Scout Center houses all of the troop camping equipment for BSA Troop 31 and our 2001 Troop Trailer.  The building is 960 square feet. A brand new all brick building was erected by dozens of volunteers in and related to BSA Troop 31.  Our building has a 9'6" ceiling and includes a pull down stairway to a large attic space.  The facility has a 16' x 8' garage door and a 10' x 8' garage door.

Why a Scout Center?

Prior to our Scout Center we had a number of trailers over the years that were stored off site.  This presented a lot of problems if something was needed at a meeting and the trailer wasn't at the meeting.  In addition the trailer was always loaded to the roof and we took a lot of things we didn't need on any given camping trip.  By building a Scout Center we resolved these problems and also made Scouts more responsible for the loading/unloading of the equipment.  Our Scout Center also houses a refrigerator and freezer which serves as storage for ice and leftover campout food.  This has already saved hundreds of dollars in the first year of operation.

How Was the Center Funded?

The Asselstine-Bigler Scouting Center was funded through donations from our Scout families, our alumni, and our chartered organization, Court Street United Methodist Church.  The total cost of our building was around $30,000 and carries a value of approximately $45,000.
